Tips for Staying Healthy this Spring

Haley Venema

Spring is right around the corner. With the change of the season comes new allergies and other related seasonal illnesses. Staying healthy during any season of life is important but in this article I will talk about some tips to help you stay healthy this spring!

Your diet plays a big role in making sure your immune system stays healthy. Spring is a great time to reevaluate your diet and change up some things. Scripps.org talks about how making sure you have a balanced diet is key! Incorporating fruits and vegetables of all different colors is a great way to make sure you are getting the proper fiber intake, vitamins & other nutrients your current diet may be lacking.

Staying physically fit during spring is another way to give your immune system the boost it needs to fight off those allergies and illnesses. It’s recommended that an individual get at least 30 minutes of light to moderate exercise a day. With the warmer weather coming now might be a great time to get outdoors more. Going for walks at the park, bicycle rides, doing yard work, or taking your exercise routine outdoors are all great ways to get your heart rate up and fresh air into your lungs.

If you’ll be traveling a lot this spring, consider doing things that will help you get in extra movement during those long car rides. When stopping for restroom breaks take a walk around the rest area or do a quick pump up exercise with some jumping jacks, lunges, or squats. Swap your sugary snacks for more nutritional snacks like nuts, veggies and hummus, fruit, or organic granola bars. You can also trade your sugary drinks for flavored water, sparkling water, or naturally flavored drinks.

Lastly, check all of the expiration dates on the medicines in your cabinet. Even after doing everything recommended to make sure your immune system is healthy you may still need an extra boost. Make sure you're prepared for this spring season by having things on hand like claritin, zyrtec, and emergen-C. You may also consider visiting your doctor if your symptoms do not go away or worsen.
